The main camera sensor of the iPhone 17 Pro will probably be smaller than the previous generation
According to Digital Chat Station, the iPhone 17 Pro models will use a smaller main camera sensor than the one used in the iPhone 16 Pro models.
The Chinese leaker claims that Apple will use a 1.3-inch sensor for the 48-megapixel main camera on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The size of this sensor has been reduced compared to the 1.28-inch sensor used in iPhone 16 Pro models. This whistleblower further points out that all three camera sensors of the Apple phone in the 17 Pro and Pro Max models will have a resolution of 48 megapixels.
The system for measuring the dimensions of the sensors is taken from an old system for measuring video recording cameras; As a result, the fraction written is more indicative of the type of sensor rather than its actual physical dimensions. In any case, a 1/1.3-inch sensor is considered slightly smaller than a 1/1.28-inch sensor.
It can be said that the difference in dimensions of the new sensor in the iPhone 17 Pro is so small that it will not have a significant impact on the performance of the camera. Apparently, Apple had to increase the size of the sensor in order to make progress in other parts of the camera system.

Apparently, the reason for reducing the size of the sensor in the iPhone 17 Pro series is the new shape of the camera protrusion. Apple probably plans to make a part of the back panel of this iPhone model out of aluminum; This issue has forced Apple to redesign the protrusion of the cameras.
Information leaked by The Information from Apple’s supply chain suggests an “elongated oval” camera module instead of a rectangular shape. Also, the part that connects the camera module to the phone body is designed with a soft curve. We expect the iPhone 17 series to be introduced around September 1404.
