The Core Ultra 300 chips arrive with significant advances in artificial intelligence processing
Intel’s Core Ultra 300 laptop processors, known as Panther Lake, are going to benefit from an updated architecture in the neural processing unit called NPU5. The Blue Team expects to revolutionize the AI performance of next-generation chips with its new NPU cores.
Early Linux kernel patches indicate that Intel’s Pentre Lake chips are likely to use the new 5th generation NPU. The code doesn’t reveal much about the performance we should expect from the 5th generation AI processor, but initial support for the NPU5 is said to require only a few lines of code, as its driver code paths are similar to previous generation NPUs. .
The current generations of Intel NPUs have very different performance, with the NPU3 in Meteor Lake offering 11.5 TOPs of computing power and the NPU4 in Lunar Lake offering 48 TOPS of computing power.
The Core Ultra 300 processors will probably use the powerful Cougar Cove cores and the low-power Skymont cores in the CPU section, and the Xe3 architecture codenamed Celestial in the GPU section, which will replace Battlemage.
Considering the impressive success of Lunar Lake processors, including in gaming performance and energy efficiency, we can expect much more capabilities from Pent Lake processors, especially in artificial intelligence processing power, thanks to the use of new architectures. Pentre Lake’s chips are expected to hit the market in the second half of next year.
