PlayStation 5 sales reached 65 million units

Sony reported that by the end of the second quarter of 2024, it has sold 65.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles. This success comes shortly after the release of PlayStation 5 Pro, the more advanced version of this console. Although the sales of Sony’s consoles this year faced a slight decline and the sales of the second quarter of 2024 were 1.1 million units less than the same period of 2023, the sales of games increased and helped to improve the financial performance of the company.

According to Engget, the sales of Sony games in the second quarter of 2024 reached 77.7 million units with a 14.9% increase compared to the same period last year. Major titles such as the action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong, which sold around 20 million copies (including the PC version), have played an important role in this growth. Another important title that played a major role in the growth of Sony’s revenues was the popular and exclusive game Astro Bot.

Financially, Sony’s gaming division has been remarkably successful. The division’s current quarter revenue rose 9 percent, and operating profit rose 73 percent to 445.1 billion yen (about $2.91 billion).

Despite the recent increase in PlayStation Network subscription prices, the number of monthly users of this platform has remained constant and reached 116 million people. Due to the New Year holidays and the launch of PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony has slightly increased its annual revenue forecast due to the optimism of revenue growth.

The Japanese company has prepared important exclusive titles for early 2025; including Assassin’s Creed Shadow and Monster Hunter Wilds, which are scheduled to be released in February. Sony’s 2025 fiscal year, which starts in February, will continue with the release of several highly anticipated games such as Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, DOOM: The Dark Ages, and the sixth title in the GTA series. These titles can lead to more sales of consoles and user interaction with Sony software.
