A new IDC report shows that in the third quarter of 2024, we see a 2.4% decrease in the volume of personal computer shipments compared to the same period last year. The total supply of personal computers in the third quarter reached 68.8 million units, which shows a decrease compared to 70.5 million units in the third quarter of 2023.
Major computer manufacturers such as Lenovo, HP and Dell have been able to maintain their market share. However, Dell’s market share decreased by four percent and reached below 10 percent. Apple has experienced the biggest decrease in sales and with a 24.2% drop, the number of computers sold has reached 5.3 million units this year from seven million units last year.
On the other hand, Asus witnessed the highest market share growth of 10%, which shows an increase of approximately 0.5 million devices in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the third quarter of 2023. Despite a few million device drops in supply volume, the demand for AI is expected to significantly increase both supply volume and company revenue.
The supply volume of artificial intelligence computers has doubled from the first quarter of 2024 to the second quarter, and it is predicted that in the coming years, the supply volume of laptops equipped with Microsoft artificial intelligence (CoPilot Plus) will grow.
According to analyst IDC, due to the start of the school and university season, personal computers equipped with artificial intelligence and devices based on Apple’s M4 series chips are expected to account for a significant portion of premium device sales.
In the last quarter, the Japanese market has seen the highest increase in the sale of personal computers. It is expected that other regions will also experience significant growth in this field in the coming seasons.
Currently, the demand is mainly focused on personal computers with basic specifications; But the demand of the business sector is increasing due to the end of the support life of the Windows 10 operating system. Many computer manufacturers are preparing their new devices to meet this growing demand.
