PCWorld hardware journalist Gordon Maung has died of cancer

Gordon Maungjournalist and editor of the PCWorld website, described as one of the founding fathers of professional technology journalism, has died after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Maung was 58 years old and the father of two children.

“With more than 25 years of experience covering a wide range of technology, particularly computer chips, Gordon’s consistent reporting, unflappable personality and commitment to journalistic standards have touched many lives,” the PCWorld website wrote in a statement. He will be deeply missed by his colleagues, industry sources, and computer enthusiasts who read his writings.”

Maung studied journalism at San Francisco State University before working as a police reporter for the Contra Costa Times in the late 1990s. In 1997, he joined Computerworld (an affiliate of PCWorld) and later worked for boot magazine (later relaunched as Maximum PC) for 16 years.

At Maximum PC, Maung developed his own unique pen that combined an intense passion for personal computers with humor and occasional outbursts of rage. As one of the first tech podcasters, Maung brought his Rant of the Week segment on the Maximum PC podcast to prominence. Maung’s genius was evident in his commitment to researching narratives, informing people, and helping them make the best technology decisions.

For most of his time at Maximum PC, Maung was the designer, builder, and main idea behind the annual Dream Machine project. During his efforts, Maung strengthened relationships with Intel, AMD, Nvidia and other hardware manufacturers.

Maung’s goal was to get the latest, greatest, and most productive pieces of hardware before anyone else, and his goal wasn’t just limited to processors and graphics cards; Rather, if a part including RAM, power and storage space was used in the construction of a personal computer, Gordon had comprehensive knowledge about all those parts.
