After a decade of activity in the field of RealSense depth camera technology, Intel has decided to separate this division and turn it into an independent company under the umbrella of Intel Capital. The said decision, which is supposed to be implemented by the middle of 2025, is considered a turning point in the history of RealSense. Intel believes that this action is done in order to increase RealSense’s growth capacities and create more flexibility in responding to market needs, and this issue is not related to Intel’s financial problems.
RealSense, born in 2013 out of Intel’s cognitive computing division and known by its current name in 2014, initially tried to find a place on Intel’s PC platforms. However, after several failed attempts and the advent of Windows Hello technology, it turned its focus to more specialized applications. Today, RealSense develops artificial intelligence-based computer vision devices, including depth-sensing cameras and biometric tools, and solutions for robotics and healthcare sensing.
RealSense plans to expand its scope of activities to areas such as stereo vision, robotics, and artificial intelligence software and hardware. RealSense products are currently used in various industries such as robotics and automation. For example, ANYmal quadruped robots use six RealSense D435 modules for environment mapping and navigation in difficult terrain.
Separating RealSense from Intel will allow the business to operate more flexibly, respond quickly to market demand, and invest more effectively in its growth. This decision comes after an up and down period for RealSense. In 2021, Intel planned to close this division; But then decided to curtail the production line and keep the unit operational.
