India became the fourth country to have space docking and connectivity technology

India is increasingly proving the capabilities of its powerful space program. On Thursday, two experimental satellites from the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) successfully docked in orbit, making India the fourth country to achieve space docking capability. The other three countries that own this technology are the United States, Russia and China.

On Thursday, ISRO wrote on X social network: “Space connection successfully completed! A historical moment. Congratulations to the whole team! Congratulations to India! ISRO’s experimental satellites were launched on December 30 on a PLSV rocket in a mission called the Space Docking Test Program (SPDEX) to test India’s indigenous technology for docking spacecraft in orbit.

ISRO officials wrote in the description of Spadex mission: “Technology [پهلوگیری و اتصال فضایی] For India’s space ambitions, viz [ماموریت‌های قمری]”, the return of samples from the moon, the construction and operation of the Bahartiya Antarctic Station (BAS) and other missions are essential.”

India plans to put its Bharatiya Space Station into orbit by 2035. The country is currently working on a robotic lunar sample return mission called Chandrayaan-4, which is scheduled to launch in 2028.

The Spadex mission consists of two satellites named “Target” and “Chaser”, each of which weighs 220 kg. These two spacecraft were originally supposed to connect on January 6; But ISRO delayed the docking and docking of the satellites several times in order to carry out more tests and simulations.

Finally, on Thursday morning, the mission achieved its goal. In a post on X, Isro wrote: “Target and chaser successfully converged from 15 meters to three meters; “They maintained this distance for a while and then finished the connection process.” According to ISRO, everything went according to plan.

Although the United States, Russia, and China, and now India, are the only countries to have connected spacecraft in orbit, the list of countries and entities that have demonstrated docking or space docking technology is extensive.

For example, Japan and the European Space Agency have both built transport spacecraft to service the International Space Station. Europa’s Autonomous Transport Spacecraft (ATV) autonomously docks with an orbiting laboratory; But the Japanese Transport Space Vehicle (HTV) can dock with the station with the help of Canadarm’s robotic arm.
