According to 9to5google, Rick OsterlowGoogle’s vice president stated in an interview that very few Pixel users have previously owned a Samsung phone. This claim is very interesting, because Samsung is one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world; So it was thought that many Pixel users were already using Galaxy phones.
In the continuation of the interview, Osterlo explains that the users who recently bought the Pixel phone were previously users of brands that no longer produce phones in the market; Like Blackberry, Nokia and LG, or they used to have an iPhone. “But ultimately, what we’re trying to do is increase the share of Android in general, and that’s the main goal of Google’s phone development department,” he continued.
“We’re trying to improve Android’s innovation, challenges, and competitiveness,” Google’s vice president explained. We’ve certainly had issues in the premium smartphone space that we’d like to address, in general. “We can solve problems for all our users, at all levels.”
It’s no surprise to hear that some Pixel users already had an iPhone. Google has long targeted iPhone users through marketing and attractive trade-in offers. The increase in the share of Google phones in the United States has coincided with LG’s exit from the smartphone market. During his interview, Osterlo mentioned problems in Google’s premium phone space, but avoided addressing them.
Google’s Pixel phones have long been criticized for disappointing overall performance compared to competing devices, as well as poor antenna performance. However, to address the latter, Google is looking for a new supplier for its phones’ modems. The company is also expected to switch its chip supplier from Samsung to TSMC in 2025, which could lead to increased performance and battery life for the company’s phones.
