Apple and Meta have refused to join the EU’s new AI safety treaty. More than 100 major technology companies, including Amazon, Google and Microsoft, have signed this voluntary agreement with the aim of developing safe and reliable artificial intelligence.
According to the Independent, the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Treaty seeks to create safety in this technology with three main actions, including promoting awareness of artificial intelligence, identifying high-risk systems, and implementing an artificial intelligence governance strategy. The mentioned agreement is based on the “artificial intelligence law” of the European Union, which is considered the first comprehensive legal framework in this field.
Apple and Meta have not joined the Artificial Intelligence Treaty due to disputes with EU officials. Meta recently had to halt the release of its AI assistant in Europe due to concerns about the use of user data to train language models.
Meta is committed to complying with the AI Act, but currently has no plans to join the pact. The company emphasized that it is likely to join the agreement in the future and is currently focusing on complying with EU regulations.
Metta also mentioned the importance of artificial intelligence to boost innovation in Europe and warned that not taking advantage of this opportunity could cause the European Union to miss out on the great benefits of the said technology.
