Retro Games will soon release a life-size remastered version of the classic 8-bit Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer called The Spectrum. It is inspired by the iconic Spectrum 48K design with rubber keys and rainbow tape. The new version has 48 games and allows fans of the classic world to easily load other titles through the USB port.
The Spectrum, which is compatible with Spectrum 48K and 128K models, has been listed on Polish and UK online retail sites with a tag of $99 and will be released on November 22.
In recent years, small consoles and retro home computers have become very popular, and now the full and large version of these products are more in the spotlight. Retro Games already rode this wave with The C64, and The Spectrum will be the next step.
Although Retro Games has yet to release an official product page for The Spectrum, images of the packaging and retail listings have revealed much of the device’s information. Among the features of this product, we can mention support for HDMI and USB ports and a fully functional keyboard.
Specifications of The Spectrum:
- Contents of the box Includes The Spectrum home computer and USB-C power cable with a length of 1.8 meters and an HDMI cable with a length of 1.8 meters
- Emulator of ZX Spectrum models 48 and 128
- Fully functional keyboard
- 48 default games including Manic Miner, The Hobbit and Head Over Heels
- Multiple 720p HD output via HDMI with PAL (50 Hz) and NTSC (60 Hz) support. The ability to play with the main image ratio of 4:3 or pixel to pixel and the possibility of applying CRT filter and adjusting the dimensions of the margins
- Ability to choose 12 attractive frames for the game environment
- Saving stages in any game place with the possibility of creating 4 slots for each title and the ability to return to the previous 40 seconds in the game process
- Playing personal games by connecting a USB flash drive with support for various formats (TAP/TZX/PZX/SZX/Z80/SNA)
- Four USB-A ports for connecting additional controllers for multiplayer games and USB flash memory connection
According to the specs of The Spectrum, you apparently need to use a separate adapter to power the device. Also, the lack of a joystick in the list of contents seems a bit worrying. None of the retail listings mention the badge joystick or controller.
Although the list of default games is not the most important feature of The Spectrum, the packaging of the device mentions some classic titles such as Manic Miner, The Hobbit, Saboteur and Head Over Heels.
