China has launched the world’s largest offshore wind turbine

Last week Ming Yang Smart Energy Company (Mingyang Smart Energy) announced that it has deployed the largest single-capacity offshore wind turbine in China’s Hainan Province. The output power of this turbine reaches 20 megawatts and surpasses the previous model of the same company which had a capacity of 18 megawatts.

According to Mingyang, the new turbine, called MySE18.X-20MW, is designed to be lightweight, modular, and highly reliable. With its very large wind rotor diameter of 260 to 292 meters, the turbine uses a maximum wind sweep area of 66,966 square meters, which is equivalent to more than 12 football fields.

According to New Atlas, Mingyang, which has a history of building the largest turbines in the ocean, has announced that its new turbine can generate 80 million kilowatt hours of electricity with an average annual wind speed of 8.5 meters per second. This amount of electricity will be enough to supply energy to the homes of 96,000 people per year.
