By breaking a record in August, BYD surpassed the sales figure of one million electric cars in 2024.
As a result of the exceptional performance in August, BYD, the Chinese auto giant, has increased the sales of its electric vehicles to more than one million units in 2024 to maintain its leading position in the market.
BYD reported that it sold 373,082 NEVs (including electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrids) in August. Such a statistic breaks BYD’s previous record in July (July and August) with 342,383 units of NEV vehicles and records the third consecutive month of record-breaking sales of BYD vehicles.

Plug-in hybrid cars, with the sale of 222,384 units and a significant increase of 73% compared to August 2023 (August and September 1402), played a significant role in the growth of BYD sales, so that the record-breaking sales of BYD plug-in hybrid cars have been achieved for the sixth consecutive month.
From the beginning of 2024 to August, BYD has sold more than 1.3 million plug-in hybrid vehicles, which represents a 43 percent increase over the sales of 866,000 units in the same period last year.
Sales of BYD’s all-electric vehicles also remain strong. The company sold 148,470 all-electric vehicles last month, which is an average increase of two percent compared to last year and a 15 percent increase compared to July.
BYD sold 1,004,623 electric vehicles in the first eight months of 2024, which represents a 12% increase over the same period last year. BYD sold 31,451 vehicles in international markets in August, which represents a 26 percent increase over last year and a five percent increase over July. The total international sales of BYD will reach 265 thousand units from the beginning of 2024.
The sales success can be partly attributed to BWD’s new technologies. The DM 5.0 hybrid system, according to BYD, reduces fuel consumption and increases efficiency. BYD surpassed Honda and Nissan in the second quarter of 2024 and became the seventh largest car manufacturer in the world.
