While we are waiting for the public release of Android 15, Google has started working on the next version of this operating system, and it seems that the code name of Android 16 is “baklava”.
Although Google no longer uses cookie names for public versions of Android, it still uses these types of codes in its internal development process. According to the announcement of Android Authority, Android 15 was known by the code name “vanilla ice cream” and now it is said that the code name of Android 16 is “baklava”; A popular layered sweet that is mostly seen in countries like Armenia, Greece, Iran and Türkiye.
The choice of Baklava password for Android 16 seems a little strange, because it does not start with the letter W. The word Waffle seemed a more logical choice for this version, and even Google could have used Whoopie Pie.
Although Google employees still refer to Android 16 as Android W in various places, it is expected that next year the statue of this version will depict the name Baklava.
An alphabetic reset for Android password names was always inevitable, but there were still obvious options for the letters X, Y, and Z. Changing the password names of Android versions with four space characters can be related to the way of changing Google’s Build ID from QPR2 version of Android 14:
- The last QPR1 build in May (May and June 1403) was UD2A.240505.001.
- The first QPR2 build was named AP2A.240605.024 in June.
The letter U at the beginning of the QPR1 build ID referred to Upside Down Cake, but Google changed the first letter to A for more consistency in the Android development method, which seems to be in line with the company’s approach this year. According to the mentioned pattern, the builds of 2025 will start with the letter B.
It should be noted that Google has not yet officially published an explanation about the changes in the naming of the code for Android versions.
