The founder of TSMC sought to hire Jensen Huang, the popular CEO of Nvidia, a decade ago

Huang, the chief executive of artificial intelligence chip maker Nvidia, who has been in the position since the company’s founding, responded to Chang by saying, “I have a job right now.” Although Chang tried to convince him again a few weeks later, he was still met with opposition from Huang.

Chang in the second volume of his autobiography about his 25 years of work at the Texas company Instruments and the founding of TSMC in 1987. He also points to some of TSMC’s deals with key customers such as Apple and Qualcomm, and how Intel turned down an invitation to invest in TSMC in the 1980s, before it became one of the company’s key customers.

Maurice Chung describes his friendship with Huang for more than two decades, and credits him with making Nvidia one of the most valuable companies in the world with its focus on artificial intelligence. Huang and Chang have talked about each other’s successes over the years.

When Chang was looking for his successor in 2013, he had considered Huang as a suitable candidate for the position due to his personality and professional experience, as well as his expertise in the field of semiconductor chips.

Maurice Chang stated that TSMC sent two production staff to help the company in 1998, when Nvidia was developing and facing a labor shortage. He also wrote in his autobiography that while fundraising for TSMC in the 1980s with Gordon Moorethe former CEO of Intel had also communicated.

Although American chipmaker Gordon Moore did not invest; But it later became one of TSMC’s customers, contracting with the company to make its latest series of laptop chips.
