According to The Information, Meta has canceled its premium headset project and Apple Vision Pro has lost one of its main competitors. It seems that Meta has canceled the project of making a premium headset with the possibility that the sale of this headset will be very expensive.
Meta announced to the staff of Reality Labs unit after a meeting to review the product with the presence Mark ZuckerbergMeta CEO, Andrew BosworthChief Technology Officer and other Meta executives, the company decided to stop the premium headset project.
According to current and former Meta employees, the company began work on the canceled premium headset project in November. This project, codenamed La Jolla, was supposed to be released in 2027. Meta planned to use the Apple Vision Pro display technology, i.e. micro OLED display, in its new headset. The high cost of these screens can be one of the reasons for canceling the Meta project.
Meta intended to keep premium headset costs under $1,000; Something that seemed practically impossible due to the high price of micro OLED displays. Quest 4 is still in development and will probably be released in 2026. It is expected that this device, like Quest 3, will have a price of about 500 dollars.
It is not yet clear if Meta intended to keep the cost of parts in the $1,000 range or the retail price of the product. Either way, the Meta headset could be cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro. Apple Vision Pro is available for $3,499. This product is technologically more advanced than its competitors due to being equipped with micro OLED displays.
Meta started the premium headset project at the same time as the introduction of the Apple headset, and now that the Apple Vision Pro has faced a drop in sales, it has canceled this project. Although Apple does not publish exact sales figures for Vision Pro; But it seems that this product is not in good condition. Reports from earlier this summer indicated that Apple is focusing on making a cheaper Vision headset.
