Apple has finally started paying compensation for the troublesome butterfly keyboard on its MacBooks
Settlement of a 2018 class-action lawsuit against Apple’s MacBook butterfly keyboards has reportedly begun.
According to the settlement website, payments are made for verified claims, and 9to5Mac’s Michael Burkhart reported that he received two compensation checks on Saturday.
The amount of compensation received by eligible users varies depending on the amount of repairs their devices require; But for some people, it could mean receiving one or more checks worth up to $395.
After the introduction of Apple’s butterfly keyboard in 2015, there were complaints about sticky and unresponsive keys, sensitivity to dust and other major problems. The company finally abandoned the said design in 2019. The lawsuit, filed in 2018, accused Apple of knowing about problems with its keyboards and hiding it from consumers.
Although Apple denied the class-action lawsuit’s claims that the butterfly keyboards were defective and admitted no fault, it agreed to pay $50 million to settle the case.
According to Apple’s settlement website, people who had the top case replaced two or more times within four years of purchasing one of the affected MacBooks will receive between $300 and $395 in compensation. MacBook owners who have only had their top case replaced once can receive up to $125 in compensation. Complainants who only needed the keys replaced will receive a maximum of $50.
Plaintiffs of the class-action lawsuit against the licensed keyboard of Apple MacBooks must have filed their lawsuits according to the deadlines set in the agreement in order to receive compensation from the company. This agreement only applies to customers who purchased the affected laptops in the states of California, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Washington.
